History of Blackstonians
Founded at the University of Southern California in 1923, Blackstonians is a pre-law honor society that recognizes academic excellence in undergraduate students and strives to expand their knowledge and perceptions of the legal profession. Students have access to a variety of events, speakers and resources that will enable them to focus on using law and the legal system for the moral improvement of society as a whole.
At Blackstonian's founding, Eugene Harley was teaching international and constitutional law to undergraduates. Dr. Harley recognized the need for his pre-law students to join together and orient themselves to the complex, ever-changing legal profession. These students founded an organization and named their group after the famous English judge and legal scholar, William Blackstone. By using the title Blackstonians, the group incorporates the tradition and honor of this individual, and the high ideals found in the legal profession.
Blackstonians is the only national honor society which recognizes the academic excellence and achievement of pre-law students. The main goals of the organization, in addition to scholarly recognition, are to prepare and inform USC's pre-law students for law school and legal professions. Blackstonians achieves these goals by hosting guest speakers to expose students to the legal profession, providing free LSAT preparation information sessions and materials, and by hosting social events networking opportunities with other pre-law organizations.
